Stefke

I met Stefke as a customer in a bar where I worked. His kindness struck me immediately. The bar had a small town crowd, and they are not always the most open-minded people. In general I was able to make people get over any problem with the "gay thing", but Stefke truly never ever had any problem. He was just a sweet guy, who spread his kindness wherever he came.

His sweetness got in the way every now and then too. He had had an awful experience with a girlfriend who milked him financially for all he was worth (and much more), and then cheated on him and left him broke. It reminded me of the story of Vulcan, the god of fire, whose wife Venus cheated him with Mars. Velazquez' painting of Vulcan's forge was the quite literal inspiration for this image. There's a reference to Stefke's passion for baseball -very unusual for a Dutch guy.

A series of different Venuses cheating on Vulcan, and Vulcan catching the cheaters.

More cheating and more catching.

And even more.

I did want to visualize Stefke's strength, for despite all the horrendous things he had to go through he kept going. And he stayed true to his kind self.Combined with his passion for baseball you get an interesting Hercules.
